One life ends, another begins

Here is my original design for today's Geek Week challenge with the Digital Dozen!  These are a little abstract but I thought they came out pretty nice.  They're meant to represent Avatar!  I resisted seeing this film for SO long because of all the hype surrounding it.  When I finally did see it I was blown away.  I loved it!  I'm very into environmental things and even though this is touted as a Fern Gully for adults (which by the way, I also love!) I felt it was very well done.  It's definitely got a message but it doesn't feel like they're throwing it at you. The movie has a great plot behind the message.  Or in front of it maybe!  Anyway these nails are meant to represent the Na'vi.  They have golden eyes, hence the golden base and then their skin is this really pretty blue but sort of shifty in the light. It also has blue stripes and then there are little luminescent spots on their faces.  The nails were so much prettier in person, they really looked like a foil they were so shiny and sparkly!  I hope I did them some justice! Don't forget to check out the other ladies designs for today!

You can't have it both ways...

...or can you?  So it's no secret that the hot new trend in the polish world is texture.  With flocked, sandy, caviar and leather effect nails popping up everywhere, it's difficult not to notice.  While I love trends like crackle and spotted and now texture, I also hate that they're just that; trends.  We all end up buying tons and tons of these and let's face it: those 15 bottles of crackle polish you bought last year are just sitting in a drawer now getting zero use. Who wants last years trend on this years nails? I've tried to find new and exciting ways to use these effects polishes but this go round I thought it might be more prudent to find ways to get in on the trend without shelling out a lot of cash.  So here's a little experiment I did for you. :)  Above you see a combination of both Models Own Coral Reef and Zoya Godiva.  I chose Godiva for this experiment because she is a neutral color and therefore seemed the least likely to interfere with the color of the Coral Reef.  On the index, middle, and pinky finger I used two coats of the Coral Reef followed by one coat of Godiva on all nails but the middle, and two coats of Godiva on the middle finger.  As you can see, there is no texture.  On top of a flat polish Godiva simply looks like a gold glitter.  A pretty one, but a flat one.  So then I decided to turn the tables. On my ring finger we have two coats of Godiva (allowed to fully dry) and then a single coat of Coral Reef.  Bingo. Now we have a flat color with a textured look. This is similar to the look of the Milani's, Barry M's, and Nails Inc textures which have no glitter, but rather, a flat tone effect.  Here's a close-up comparison:

Again on the left here we have two coats of Coral Reef topped with two coats of Godiva. I'm guessing this is why they tell you not to use a base coat because it just looks like glitter on my polish. It was not raised in any way.  On the right we have two coats of Godiva followed by one coat of Coral Reef.  See how it's textured but the color is there?  Now you can turn any polish into a textured polish without ruining your bottle by mixing it or shelling out for a million different colors of polish! Magic!  If any of you try this with different colors, I'd love to see the results!!

I'm only gonna break your heart...

This week the Digit-al Dozen is doing Love and Heartbreak.  This is my day one mani which sort of encompasses both!  The hearts are for love and the cracks are for the break! :P  This actually came out really well even though I was kind of worried about it because it's been awhile since I used my crackle polishes and some of them are tricky to work with!  I also had to do some maneuvering to get the heart shapes and I was concerned that it would crack funny or have weird cracks since the way you move the brush contributes to the way the cracks occur.  All in all I think it came out nicely though! Here's a close-up of my favorite nail. :)

Do you have any crackle polishes? What kinds of things do you use them for?

Don't forget to check out what the other ladies came up with for today's challenge.

Cracked Up!

A nice easy one today to start the week!!  I did some crackle nails awhile back with copper and a mint green polish which I LOVED.  Then I got this green polish in a clearance sale for around $1 and I decided to test it out.  The color is beautiful but it seemed super plain on my nails and even though I tried a hundred times to come up with something snazzy to put over the top, I just couldn't find anything I liked.  So I went with my old staple of,  "If you can't figure out a great art for your nails: Crackle it." And I did.  I used gold crackle this time because it had more contrast than the others. I did later use this and a similar color in lots of Christmas mani's! I guess I just got it too early in the season!  In other news, my nubbins from January are very nearly back to where they should be so when I get some free time (read as: next Sunday) I will try to get the rest of my flakie dupe posts ready to upload.  AND new mani's (which do not have ugly nubbin nails) will be showing up on my blog! :)  (My luck all my nails will now break today in class/work.)

Hope you all had a lovely relaxing weekend! Enjoy the nails and thanks for following!!

Purple Crumpet Fairy Challenge: Glitterbomb

This week's Purple Crumpet Fairy Challenge was chosen by Abby and it's a glitterbomb mani! For those of you who are unaware, a glitterbomb is when you put crazy amounts of glitter on your fingers (or toes!). While I have collected TONS of glitter over the past year or so, I really hardly use most of it. It's not even the removal that keeps me from putting it on it just doesn't really suit me I suppose.  However, for those of you who haven't heard yet, I started school this past Wednesday!  I'm going to school for Nail Tech and when I graduate I hope to get a managers license and get a sort of "on the go" mani business going.  Of couse, I'll need to build some clientel and whatnot first.  But anyway,  I could not for the life of me decide what to do for my first day of school mani.  My first thought was to go super over the top with my nail art (it's nail school after all!) but my second thought was to go totally neutral or bare.  I mean, how often do you see famous nail gals with polish on?  So I went with something sparkly.  It's understated but it's also special becuase...it's Absolutely Alice! An HTF polish that I swapped a good friend for awhile back AND which I've not yet used.  I was surprised how much I liked it.  And while it's not a TON of flashy glitter.  It's just enough for me. :) For a little bit of a fun mix-up I used Tarnished Gold on the ring finger.  Hope you all enjoy and thanks for following!!

Jade Necklace

This is kind of a lazy day nail for me.  I wanted to use my new China Glaze metallic crackle again, since the last time I tried it out it wasn't the best experience.  I'm glad I reserved judgement because this color is AMAZING.  This is the copper crackle and it's really the only one I was even excited about when I first saw the collection online.  I used it over a minty green color because it reminded me of a copper and jade ring I have that I LOVE :)  (pics eventually :P)  I took a close up for you guys (I'm experimenting with new camera tricks!) so you can see the glittery goodness of the crackle.  It has gold, yellow, orange, and copper flakes throughout it and it looks amazing on your nails!  I left these on for nearly a week and that's a record for me!!

Enjoy and thanks for following!! :)

Lunar Eclipse

These nails are actually from ages ago, but I kind of hate them and was debating whether or not to post them.  Then I lost a picture of some really GREAT nails that I loved and I realized that this started out as a journey for me personally, to log my nail adventures and see how I improve as I go.  So it makes sense to post the not so great along with the good ones!  Anyway I intended to do some silver space-like designs on the nails but after I got it on my ring finger (great trick btw starting designs on your ring finger. If you hate it just stop and leave it at an accent nail!) I didn't like it so much.  So I crackled over it and called it a day!  The base color is from Orly's Cosmic FX collection and even though it doesn't pick up well in this picture, it's a blue/purple duochrome which looked lovely in the sun!

My Neighbor Totoro

This past week I've been SUPER sick.  Like, I spent three whole days in my bed sick.  And there's not a whole lot to do when you're home sick in bed.  Sick days just aren't what they used to be! lol...so I watched movie after movie after...well, you get the idea.  One of my favorite movies is the Japanese film, My Neighbor Totoro.  And after time number three watching it, I decided to attempt some Totoro nails.  I was pleasantly surprised with how easy it was to make Totoro actually.  Other than drying time I didn't have any real issues with this mani and I never even had to start over!! I intended originally to leave all the nails but the thumb and the ring just plain blue.  Then I thought some clouds might be nice and then I decided to use my China Glaze crackle because it looked similar to Totoro in color.  It crackled without any fuss and looked pretty nice over the blue so I ran with it!  Hope you all enjoy and thanks for following!
